MW

Michael W.

British expatriate, Bangkok

"I came to Garuda Advocates at a particularly difficult point. I had no idea how Thai family law would apply to my situation as a foreigner. Arjun was patient with my questions — many of which were, I now realise, quite basic — and explained everything clearly. The mediation session we held was better structured than I had expected, and we reached an arrangement both parties could accept. I did not feel rushed at any point."

Watthana, Bangkok

"The spousal support petition took about five months from start to finish. I was nervous about what the process would involve, but Somchai explained each step before it happened rather than after. The fees were exactly what had been agreed at the start — no surprises. I would not hesitate to recommend the firm to anyone in a similar situation."

David L.

Australian, Phra Khanong

"A solid, professional firm. Communication was consistent and the advocate assigned to my matter clearly knew the Family Court well. The process took longer than I had initially hoped, though in hindsight that was probably inevitable given the complexity of the property questions involved. I felt my interests were represented carefully throughout."

Naphat T.

Sukhumvit, Bangkok

"Nattaya, who led our mediation, has a talent for keeping a conversation productive without it feeling forced. There were moments where things became tense and she navigated them well. We left with a written summary that both sides found acceptable. That said a great deal about how the session was managed."

Claire R.

French national, Bangkok

"I found the firm through a recommendation from another expatriate who had used them previously. The initial consultation was candid — they told me honestly which service suited my situation rather than assuming I needed the most comprehensive option. The support petition was handled efficiently and I was kept informed throughout. Fees as agreed."

Kanya S.

Thonglor, Bangkok

"A complex matter that ran for close to a year. Throughout that time I always felt like I understood what was happening and why. The written updates the firm sent at regular intervals were particularly helpful — they gave me something concrete to refer back to between communications. Somchai's conduct at the final hearing was measured and effective."

Parenting Schedule Mediation — Resolved in a Single Session

Challenge

An expatriate couple with two children could not agree on a parenting schedule following separation. Previous informal discussions had broken down, and neither party wished to proceed to contested court proceedings.

Approach

A mediation session was arranged at our offices with both parties. Nattaya held brief pre-session meetings with each parent separately, then facilitated a joint session structured around the children's weekly schedule and school calendar.

Outcome

Agreement reached within the session. A written summary was issued the same afternoon. Duration: one day. Both parties reported the process was considerably less adversarial than they had expected.

"We came in expecting the worst. We left with something we could both live with."

Maintenance Petition Following Long-term Marriage

Challenge

A client of 22-year marriage sought maintenance following separation. Financial records were incomplete and the other party's income was partly drawn from a private business, making straightforward documentation difficult.

Approach

Our team worked methodically through available financial documentation, prepared a detailed petition, and secured interim maintenance at the first hearing. We then prepared for the final hearing over the following four months.

Outcome

Final maintenance order granted at a level close to what had been sought. Total duration: 5.5 months. Client described the communication throughout as the most reassuring aspect of the engagement.

"I always knew what was happening. That made a considerable difference to how I managed the process."

Cross-border Divorce with Property and Custody Dimensions

Challenge

A matter involving a Thai national and a European resident, with property in both jurisdictions and a child whose schooling crossed borders. Jurisdiction questions required careful early analysis before proceedings could be framed.

Approach

Somchai led the engagement with coordination with a European correspondent firm on jurisdiction questions. Thai proceedings were filed once the applicable law was established. Custody and property were addressed as separate modules within the overall matter.

Outcome

Custody arrangement agreed at interim stage, avoiding a contested hearing on that issue. Property matter resolved through negotiated settlement at the family court conciliation stage. Total duration: 11 months.

"Given everything involved, the result was better than I had reasonably expected."
